I would like to dig into it. I went through the controversy myself in picking tires. some people swear by “skinnies” i.e. 255/85r16 and others decry the skinnies crowd and go with a more traditional 285/75/r16. I went traditional on the advice of someone who had tried skinnies and hated it but I would like to do a little research into the specifics of why. I will admit to them being rad aesthetically

It’s weird because it seems everybody outside of the U.S., where such tires are readibly available, swears by them. But I see so many willys Jeeps on CL fitted with super wide tires it makes me cry.

yeah, I hear a lot of that too, but part of the reason...I think...is due to a lack of high quality wide tires. There was that post on Expedition portal about this where the well traveled explorers ONLY went skinny, their advice was to do likewise and its only when reading the article you realize its because they bought cheap tires that were available and for whatever reason they did better than cheap available wide tires. not to mention that our highway speeds make tall tires with lots of sidewall a less appealing prospect than it would in a place you never see 60 mph.
